Although hair extensions can be glorious, they have their dull moments. Since our tiny strands love to hug one another, we have to deal with those seemingly never-ending knots and tangles. I say, no more fighting with your brush, no more groans of frustrations and definitely NO MORE HEADACHES (period). I now present you the detangling secret.
Achieving Rapunzel-like hair starts with a proper installation. You want to build a good foundation for your hair, not only will you be thankful, but your hair will be thankful as well. The key is to have an oil-free scalp…oil is not your friend here. If your hair is excessively oily, it will bleed into your extensions thus leaving your hair a matted mess (and we definitely don’t want that). However, if you decide to leave out some of your natural hair to cover your installation, light oils are totally welcome.
Products should also be held to a minimum (sorry product junkies) because the products you put into your hair can seep into those extensions. And we already know what happens after that…(nothing good). With cheaper brands, one should be cautious of this. With higher quality brands like Pretty Hair, products should not be used on the hair extensions… it’s not necessary.
Believe it or not, certain shampoos can add to your tangling problem. Yes, you heard me right: shampoo as in the thing you wash your hair with. It is best to use sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfate is an agent included in many shampoos to lift and cleanse the scalp of natural oils. Since extensions are not necessarily a part of your scalp, the use of sulfate will dry out your weave, leaving it feeling like straw. After cleansing your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo, a light conditioner can be added to soften up the extensions. Of course, you want to rinse and wash out all the product thoroughly.
Finally, please please please get a silk scarf. Silk scarves are indeed a girl’s best friend, your extensions will be grateful. I could go on and on about the benefits of wearing a silk scarf, but it not only protects your natural hair, but it also keeps your installation looking nice and new.
So get a good installation, stay away from the products, run away from the sulfate (she’s not welcome here) and rock your silk scarf to sleep. Have fun enjoying your tangle-free hair!!
